Hemming your pants with a sewing machine

Step 1: Get the right measurements

If you are adjusting the pants for someone else, you should get the person to wear the pants with shoes. This way you can know just long the pants is expected to be. The reason for wearing shoes is that it would help you to know just where the pants should reach when the owner wears a shoe.

Do not assume when taking the measurement of others and allow them to tell you where they want the pants to reach. Some might like their pants sweeping the floor while others might prefer that the pants stay above their ankle. There are different people with different choices.

When you have gotten the right measurement, make sure to fold the pants and pin it at the desired length. Pinning would make sure that the folding does not come undone when the wearer removes the pants.

If you are hemming your own pants, you could take the measurement of a pant that is just the right length and use it as a reference.

Step 2: Mark and Cut

With the folding still intact, press the cloth under some heat with the iron on the ironing board. Different pants material would accommodate different degrees of heat so be careful so as not to burn the pants.

If done right, the ironing is expected to create some clear line or crease on the pants. You can now use chalk to clearly mark out the length you want the trouser to be. Draw a straight line on the pants with the ruler.

You would need to make other markings on the pants. Measure two lines of equal distance between the original hemline. These two lines are determined by how much fold you want the pants to have. Now you are expected to have three lines on each leg of the pants.

Get your scissors and the pants in such a way that the third line is where the length of the pants stops. Use a sharp pair of scissors so that you would be able to cut through the pants once and clean. Try not to work your way through the pants too fast as this might cause some irregular cuts or worse, cause you to make a mistake that ruins the entire pants.

Step 3: Fold and Press again

Fold the pants from the line below the original hemline. Iron the pants again so as to create a smooth hem. Pressing the pants well would make your job of sewing so much easier. When the pressing is done well, you would be able to easily identify where you are expected to cut the pants from.

Step 4: Sewing the hem

Turn the pants inside out and get your sewing machine ready. Check the needle of the machine to make sure that it is a match for the pants material.

Position the pants on the machine in a way that the pants are pointing outwards. The presser foot of the machine should also be against the fold. Sew slowly and carefully to ensure that there are not irregularities.

Sew all the way round the pants. You should be done with sewing the hem in less than 3 minutes.
